Microsoft Windows 7: First Impressions
Hmm, should I wipe everything or create another virtual pc image to try out the new beta of microsoft's new windows operating system?
The last beta, Vista was fine but then again by the time I installed it it was RC2.
Maybe the latter option, assigned 25GB of Hard Drive Space to Virtual Box and 1024MB of ram, with 128MB of video memory and started the process at 7.37pm
20.13 it finishes installing and asks for an username/password before the product key.
Hmm 30 seconds to tell me it's wrong! At least they check for the code, even though millions of people are allowed access to this beta!!! January 17, 2009 8:16 PM
20.17 Network setting options are just as Vista, with options such as "Home"/"Work"/"Public" locations.
Although this new "homegroup" option is tempting, but why do I need to remember a 8-9 digit long random code to add other users to this group from day one of installing windows? What if the computer goes tits up and the new installation gives a new code, does that mean all connected systems need re-setting up!
Why can't it be like blue-tooth, ask for a new pass code each time you add a user/device! January 17, 2009 8:20 PM
20.21 I'm into the windows desktop! Default icons are the same are previous windows, only "Recycle Bin" although a "Send Feedback" icon has been added.
I wonder if they'll do the same as Vista anyone using this tool get a free license?! I'm definitely gonna make use of it then!
Start Menu has no words on, only a round icons with the usual windows logo! Next to it appears to be the usual quick launch with Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player and other other folder.
The bottom round shows the date/time and 2 symbols (hmm one's red with a red cross in!) The desktop icon is boring though and shows a fish in water (not the usual landscape images!) And the corner shows: "Windows 7" "For testing purposes only. Build 7000"
So this is the supposedly "leaked" version, about a week before the beta release, surely they could have given us a newer one!
Anyway I'm off to play with the new OS now! January 17, 2009 8:27 PM
Hmm with no graphic cards or monitor detected the 1152 * 864 options displays fine but the mouse can't move up past a certain point (bug or driver issue???)
Why or why does Internet Explorer have the About blanked out, bug? Same with WMP, no menu cannot see which version is bundled in, looks like 11! January 17, 2009 8:41 PM
Now do you remember the quick launch icons I mentioned?
F***ing pain in the ass, you can only use them to open 1 instance of the program, clicking on it again minimizes it. But sometime I might want 5 instances of a windows explorer open to move file here and there, I'm reporting that one! Hovering over the icons only shows the titles of those open, i.e. IE shows the web pages' title and windows explorer shows the folder name opened! Maybe more handy here if it showed the full name!
Another thing noticed is every window in the top right corner shows a link "Send Feedback" perfect - I'll find an error everywhere and send it! January 17, 2009 8:45 PM
Hmm the start menu is similar to Vista, no change but "Run" is now hidden in the accessories menu! thankfully the "windows" key and "R" shortcut still works!
And out of the minimum specs of 16 GB free HDD space only 6.52GB has been used! File System layout is the same as Vista, "Program Files", "Users", "Windows" etc...
Whenever you open a window it shows the icon in the taskbar without the text and other open instances group together (*neat*) January 17, 2009 8:50 PM
Hmm, the OS hasn't been activated, I've got 3 days left to do so, oh to hell with it, I'll do it now!
Lets see how much a virtualised copy gives for the computer performance otherwise known as "Windows Experience Index) I think vista RC2 installed on a new partition gave 4.9?
. .. ... .... .....
It got 1.0 (What the HELL!) Processor 3.4 Memory (RAM) 4.5 Graphics 1.0 Gaming graphics 1.0 Primary hard disk 5.9
Oh wait, is it because I've not installed the graphics card driver and only allocated 128MB of RAM for the OS! January 17, 2009 8:57 PM
one is for the usual network options and the other for Windows Security Issues... I've not set up the automatic updater, installed an anti virus program or run anti-spyware checks.... Hmm Antivirus providers show: "AVG" Woohoo "Kaspersky" "Norton" *POO*
Arghh, the link takes you directly to the paid version of AVG, and the free one doesn't yet say Windows 7 compatible, lets see if my theory of "vista compatibility" works! January 17, 2009 9:08 PM
Hmm windows update has already release a patch for recorded TV content, useless for me though as virtualised PC's don't carry over non essential hardware...
However it did also find new drivers for my network card and sound/audio card.
On another note AVG v8.0 installed fine without any compatibility settings applied, found the updated virus definitions and is protecting my computer *yeah* January 17, 2009 9:26 PM
On shutting down the system through "Start Menu" > "Shut Down" it showed a "Program has stopped responding"
guess what it was... Explorer - playing log off sound.
Haha, when I can have a free copy of Windows Vista/Office 2007 as per their FULL beta participation team then I'll submit that one, and ask them to hard code it to ignore in future. February 23, 2009 1:18 AM

Screen resolutions - shows a vertical (not horizontal anymore!) slider bar showing options of:
ReplyDelete1600 * 1200
1280 * 1024 (hidden why?!)
1152 * 864
1024 * 768
800 * 600

And the only yellow things are
1) "Base System Device"
2) "Multimedia Audio Controller"
What's number 1? and no wonder I have no sound!
